Women of Grace: Holly and Jill join us today to discuss “propitiation” from the devotional journal “Search for Significance.” Jill says ‘Thank God that He does the work for us… or else we’d be a mess.” You can never spend too much time with God. Spiritual growth is not magic, but you really have to work for it. Holly says compassion is something she’s just beginning to understand. We are responsible for our choices and need to let God intervene. Too often, the hardest person to love and respect is ourself. But, we’re made brand new in Christ. It’s not about me, but about Him. Stand firm in what God has called us to do.

“But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.” — 2 Thessalonians 2: 13-14

Following our Christmas weekend, today’s first guest is Hy-Vee dietician, Susan Coe, from the 108th & Fort store. This is the time of year when many people make resolutions to eat better next year. She says anything with fiber or protein will stick with you longer. Think about your snack choices, like protein and fruit bars. Hummus dip is also a healthy choice. Light cheese is another alternative. 100-calorie packs of almonds can help with portion control. Chia flour can be added to yogurt, oatmeal and smoothies. Dry, roasted soybeans are high in fiber and a great souce of protein. Fresh peeled garlic is a hot item this year. It can be added to all kinds of recipes, too. There is also now available lower-sodium lunchmeat. Steamers can also give you other choices. But, Susan says don’t eat these too often as they can contain a higher amount of sodium. If you need help to eat healthier you can get a private consultation with your neighborhood dietician. Go to: www.hy-vee.com, put in your zip-code and you can find where to go that is close to you and get the services they offer.

Also with us today from the Omaha Police Department is Captain Scott Gray. The next major holiday is New Year’s. He says we’ve recently had a high number of drunk driving fatalities and they want to put a stop to that. Extra officers will be out on patrol, funded in part, by a number of grants. Scott says plan ahead, designate a driver who’s not drinking to take you home, or have a pre-arranged time and place to go to have someone drive you home, or even call a cab. Drive a friend home who has had too much to drink or offer to let them stay over at your place. If you have to, take away their keys. Omaha has one of the highest drunk-driving conviction rates, about 97-percent. And, your costs can be as much as $5,000 before everything is settled. Be aware of those who are with you, plan ahead and know how much you can realistically drink.

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” — 1 Corinthians 10: 13

Our first guest today is Kate Oelke Turner with the American Cancer Society’s High Plains Division. She has information about their program called: ”Look Good, Feel Better.” It’s for women to help them combat changes when undergoing treatments for cancer. They get classes, free makeup, makeovers, free wigs and a psychological lift from what’s going on to them. Kate says their goal to to keep women walking tall as they go through chemo, radiation or other cancer treatment. There is no fee for the support program, which relies heavily on grants and donations. In Omaha, you can call 402-393-5801. Or, nationally, the number is: 1-800-ACS-2345. Kate says classes are held all over Omaha, and in surrounding cities, as well.

Also, back today is Pam Wiese from the Nebraska Humane Society, joined by “Baby,” a spayed female, chocolate Labrador Retriever mix. Shelter Staff think she’s about 9 years old and she weighs approximately 80 pounds. Pam says ‘Baby’ is a ready-made pet, an easy dog to be around and would be good as a companion. Pam says an older dog can teach a younger dog learn new tricks and how to behave, while a younger dog sometimes actually puts new life into an older one. She suggests bringing the older dog to meet the younger to see how they get along. And, once together make sure to monitor their behavior together. Pam says the NHS does have a behavior help line available to help you. The shelter has a volunteer program and they’ll take over Christmas Eve, 11 t0 1. If you’d like to volunteeer in the future: www.nehumanesociety.org is their website.

“It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he causes me to stand on the heights.” — 2 Samuel 22: 33-34

Pastor Cliff Tulsie is back today with us from Spirit of Faith Church with the message: ’Space, but no room.’ He reminds us God chose that humanity not be alone. And, after the fall, he chose some would get eternal redemption. When we are not in a relationship with God, we are not in His will. Mary and Joseph appeared to be a normal couple, not rich, as they looked for a place to stay in Bethlehem. Since they found no room at a shelter, baby Jesus was born in a small manger outside of town. Pastor Cliff says it’s no accident there would be no room for Him at birth in the world He created, just as Jesus didn’t fit into the business, legal or the religious world of His time. Ask yourself if you have room in your heart for Jesus today.

“and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.” — Luke 2: 7

With us today Shelley Hayes from Prison Fellowship’s ‘Project Angel Tree.” They provide gifts for children of incarcerated parents at Christmas. The parents get to pick out a gift and send a personalized note to their child and let them know the child is not responsible for their parent’s actions that led them to be imprisoned and to know the love of Jesus Christ. They continue to accept donations right up to Christmas. 1-888-Angel-05. They also provide programs through the year with summer camps, mentoring and a letter-writing club.

Also back today is Danelle Schlegelmilch from the Red Cross in Omaha. She says they have a giving campaign underway for you can get gifts for military or people in remote villages and immunizations this Christmas season. www.redcross.org is where you’ll find the catalog listings. The need for blood continues all year long and there is a special holiday blood drive drive coming up next Wednesday, December 29th. Danelle reminds people to keep their appointments at Millard North High School and in Council Bluffs. And she has some holiday travel tips to have your emergency preparedness kit in your car when traveling, not just longer trips but shorter ones, too. Have a full tank of gas and make sure if stuck stay in your car and keep your cell phones charged.

“Now about your love for one another we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other. And in fact, you do love all of God’s family throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more,” — 1 Thessalonians 4: 9-10

Pastor Phil Waggoner is back today with more Parenting through Proverbs. He says Chapter 22, verse six is the ‘granddaddy’ of advice for parenting. There’s a time when a child has to figure out things for themselves. A parent’s role is getting them to the point where they can make good decisions. Point your kids in the right direction and they won’t be lost. We’re all different with different gifts. Too often, parents try to fit their kids into a box that’s not meant for them. Watch which way your child is leaning and let them go. Initiate discipline and train them to have a relationship with God. Open the door to them to receive the Gospel.

“Train up a child in the way he should go [and in keeping with his individual gift or bent], and when he is old he will not depart from it.” — Proverbs 22: 6

This morning our guest is Linda Reed with ’168 a Prayer Room.’ It began last March in what used to be a warehouse. Churches were invited to sign up and come for continuous prayer in four-hour blocks. The next one will launch at the end of the year/beginning of the new year, again at 1011 South Saddle Creek Road. Linda says this time the interactive prayer room will have a garden-oriented visual theme when it’s open December 31st thru January 7th. She says there are still some slots available. You can email: llreid@aol.com or allan@ccihopp.org to get more information. Linda says it’s their goal that all ages of people come together to experience the Lord and worship Him. www.facebook.com/omaha168

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, our Savior;” — Isaiah 43: 2-3

We have visitors today from Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo, including a corn snake! Supervisor of Reptiles and Amphibians, Sara Plesuk says they’re called corn snakes because they would eat mice and rats in corn cribs. They are found in much of the U.S. and should be hibernating now. Sara says it’s important for kids to have positive interactions at the zoo with animals, such as snakes. Sara says the zoo offers a winter break for the kids with day camps. And, this weekend they’ll get visits from Santa with supper, crafts and more. Then, it’s ‘Penguins and Pancakes’ on the 28th and 29th (with no formal-wear required.) The zoo is open yearround and the only time you’ll need to wear a coat is when you’re between buildings. They’re open 10-t0-4, except for Christmas and Thanksgiving Day. www.omahazoo.com

We also have guests today from the Nebraska Humane Society. Pam Wiese and “Sam.” He’s is a neutered male, brown and black Labrador Retriever and Golden Retriever mix. Shelter Staff think he’s about 4 years old and he weighs approximately 120 pounds. Pam says Sam is a large, active dog who loves kids so much he might knock them over. He’s happy-go-lucky, but not crazy. Pam reminds us to keep pets warm this winter, although some breeds do love being out this time of year. The NHS does offer “drop in classes” to help you work with commands and give them a change of scenery and some brainwork to give them something new to do.
