Welcome to November!  When you changed your clocks, did you check your batteries in your smoke and CO detectors?  We want you to be safe!

Our first guest today is Mike Saklar of the Sienna Francis House.  He’s the director.  The Siena Francis House was started by two nuns and their attorney but it is not denominational.  This is one of the regions largest homeless shelter.    It’s running at full capacity.

The Siena Francis House helps men and women and since their inception has grown and moved into larger facilities.  Due to the economy, Mike says the Siena Francis house could use more room.

There are no conditions set on those needing shelter at the Siena Francis House.

Mike says there are those who are temporarily homeless, from a job loss or a divorce, for example, then there are those who have drug abuse issues who are in and out of homelessness, and those who are chronically homeless  – with mental health issues and physical health issues.

An alcohol and drug treatment center as well as mental health care are availble on the Siena Francis house campus.

www.sienafrancis.org is the website if you would like more information.

The average age of homeless being served is rising, Mike says ten years ago, it was 35, now it’s 45, and there is an influx of women with small children.  Domestic violence is the primary cause of the homelessness with women and children.

Job loss, cut hours, inaffordable housing are factors impacting the increase of homelessness in the Omaha metro area.

Single men are increasingly finding their ways into homeless shelters.  Mike says many of those folks have grown up in dysfunctional homes and have not developed stability themselves.

A lot of young people who have grown out of the foster care system end up in homeless shelters.

Cancer takes a toll on families and family’s finances, sometimes homes are taken to pay hospital bills and then the survivors are out on the streets.

Substance abuse is a big factor in homelessness.  Meth  has turned businessmen and those with promising careers turned into addicts and homeless.

Needs of the Siena Francis house – certainly canned goods, food, winter clothing, TOILET PAPER! as well as other paper products.  Laundry detergent, sanitation supplies.

About five percent comes from governement sources, another 10 percent from community foundations, the rest is from donations.

Clothing, other items are welcome.  1111 N. 17th Street is a drop off point.  There is a need for larger sized clothing as well.  Food donations are accepted at the same location.

Christmas is celebrated at Siena Francis house, so gift items are certainly appreciated as well.

To contact Mike, go to sienafrancis.org or call 402- 341-1821.

Lots of needs, if you’re led to help, please do so.

Susan Eustace with the Salvation Army is here, and their tree with lots of improvments, will be lit on November 13th.   Santa, live reindeer, snacks from Jimmy Johns and hot chocolate near American National Bank at 90th and Dodge, northeast corner.  Please check their website for details.

Bellringing starts this weekend, the Kroc center opens, lots more, please check their website on this page.

Sign up for Christmas assistance this week as well on Wednesday – 3612 Cumming street, please bring ID. 898-5860 for more information.

Susan says numbers of those needing help is up, donations are down, approximatly 30 percent. Many new people – who have never had to have assistance before.  Many people’s reserves are depleted and then an emergency thows them into needing assistance.

Volunteer bell ringers are being sought.  Please check the website or the phone number listed above.

September’s Note:

No matter how hard we try to do the right thing, we can’t always prevent bad things from happening in our body.  We should do the best we can to take care of ourselves, but we will still always need God to be our Healer.

Just a quick reminder – we do have the time change this weekend – Sunday, don’t forget to reset your clock AND to put new batteries in smoke and CO detectors.

Lt. David Martinez and Molly Skold from the Salvation Army are our guests this morning.   The opening of the Kroc Center is the focus today.

The Kroc family – if you’ve ever been to McDonalds, you’re familiar with their family business.  When Ray passed away in 2000, he left money for his wife, Joan to do good works.  She studied and felt a first class community center in metro areas that weren’t well served would be the best way to utilize this money.

The Salvation Army was chosen to help with this.  Please see their website for all the details.  The local Salvation Army also did local fundraising  to provide a match for this excellent project.

Molly feels the South Omaha location is idea – that South Omaha already is a vibrant community and the Kroc Center enhances this.  This community center is accepting sponsorships for families and children.

Aside from the programs and recreation availability at the Kroc Center, this is also home to a Salvation Army congregation, with worship and fellowship.   10:30 November 8th is the consecration ceremony for the new church.

You do not have to be a member of the Salvation Army Church to participate in the Kroc Community Center, and you do not have to be a member of the Community Center to attend the Salvation Army service.

You do not have to be a member to participate in specific classes.  More classes will be available at the first of the year.

www. omahakroc.org for more information.

The Salvation Army program guide, their classes and everything that is offered is available online at the link provided on the side of this website.

Aside from various classes such as dance, pottery, etc., the church will be offering marriage enrichment and other family oriented help classes.

During the construction of the center, church members wrote scripture and blessings and placed in various parts of the building, prayed over the the building during the entire time.

Next Friday is the official ribbon cutting.  November 9-15 will be open house tours – no appointment needed. November 16th is the official opening, with the swimming pool, basketball court, etc. open for use.

September’s Note:

Jesus’ temptation happened just before the greatest breakthrough in His life and ministry.  It will happen before the greatest breakthrough in yours, too.  Be ready for it.  And remember that no matter how great the temptation is you face,  “He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world”  (1 John 4:4)

Our guest/guest host today is Jeff Kaiser.

Jeff is a familiar voice to KCRO and KGBI listeners, having worked both stations in the past.  As much as radio is an “obsessive-compulsive” profession, God called Jeff out of radio and into ministry.  While he enjoys an occasional foray back into radio, his focus is still on working for the Lord.

Jeff spends the first part of the program today discussing how, in his visits to other countries, he sees the fruit of God’s work, with those eager to hear the Word.

Jeff goes on about the bickering of denominational differences, i.e. dunking verses sprinkling, etc., how so many of us are spiritual “babies” and need to start becoming more mature Christians and learn to listen for His voice.  We need to see what is truely important, not the fine points, but reaching souls to turn them to Christ.

Trials and tribulations are the refining and sharpening of us Christians.  1Peter 1-6 &7.  God is full aware of the problems in your life.  Those struggles are what gives us experience, ability to help others.  Everything is God filtered.  There is no greater than God.  Satan isn’t on an equal par with God. All things were created by God, not one thing was created that was not created by God.  God created the angels, of which Satan is a fallen one.  God is allowing Satan to work because it helps to refine and polish us.  But we need to recognise that nobody exceeds, nobody comes close to the power of our Lord.

Jeff recounts the touching devotion of a 102 year old sister in Christ in Finland that he recently visited – how her prayers for revival and salvation are still as earnest as ever.  Darkness and death are so pervasive in the culture – from death oriented video games and music to the disposal of morals and denigration of humans and their souls and their worth to The Creator.

By the way, even when you’re feeling down and thinking bad about yourself, you must remember – God created you, you are precious to him, no matter if you’re heavy or underweight, no matter if you’re combatting acne  or if you have a perfect face, you’re still precious to the Lord.  We should not allow anyone, society,  or any group to tell us that we are not precious and dear and loved by God.

Jeff says people need to hear the Gospel, so that we know how much God loves us and gave His son for us.  He watches over us and nurtures us, sometimes in ways we don’t understand, but all things happen for the good of those that love God and are called according to His purpose.

We’re to love one another as Christ loves the church and gave His life for it. We are the church.

There’s much more that can be conveyed by the keystrokes on this page.  Please do listen in to tonight’s rebroadcast at 9pm on 660 KCRO.

Jeff also says that we should take personal account of our own time, what is taking our time away from Christ?  Idols of the heart – we should ask God to reveal to us those things that we do that are offensive to Him, and to help us overcome those issues/habits that are interfering with our relationship to Him.  That relationship with Him is priceless and precious and when we get over being afraid or wanting to avoid Him, our lives become so much fuller.

Even negative thoughts can quench the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is gentle.

Let our conduct be honorable especially around those unbelievers.

That first small compromise is the beginning of the fall of a believer.  Nip it in the bud.

Psalm 103 – God really does deal with us with a light hand.  Discipline (or training) sometimes isn’t fun, but it’s for a purpose – to prepare us.

A recent trip to Finland, Latvia and Lithuania – shows to Jeff and to us, that people all over the world are the same – all people have needs, concerns, pains….all have souls that are precious to God.

Jeff recounts how eager these folks were to hear the Word, for emotional and physical healings.

A Pool of Bethesda presided over by Jeff is planned once a month, next one is November 20th and Comfort Inn at 72nd and Grover at 7pm.  Also at Roca de Salvation this Sunday on 30th and Leavenworth Street 7pm.

Details:  www.hisharvest.net

Thank you Jeff, for sharing some of that prime rib – it’s better than canned baby food! :)

September’s Note:

The best time to pray about temptation is before you fall into it.  After the lure presents itself, resisting temptation becomes much more difficult.  The model prayer Jesus taught us to pray as a matter of course is a good place to start.

Do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.  For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, Amen.  (Matthew 6:13)

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

Just a reminder from September – this weekend, Sunday, November 1st is Daylight Savings Time.  While you’re resetting  your clocks, also check the batteries in your smoke and CO detectors.  For those of us who are on a very limited budget, the Omaha Fire Department does have a number of donated batteries, first come, first serve basis.  Contact your closest fire station for details.

Our first guest today is Cliff Tulsie, a chaplain with Good News Jail Ministry and a mental health counselor.  He teaches a program called “Renewing you Mind”.    It’s based on a program called “Cognitive Renewal” that applies Biblical principles in rehabilitation of those people who are incarcerated.

Delaying gratification and thinking out long term results of actions – part of the teachings used in this program.

His office is at 113th & Q near John Galt Boulevard, the number is 650-4014.   You can email Clif at  clifton.tulsie@goodnewsjail.org

Dysfunctional thinking is addressed in the program used in the Good News Jail ministry and in his private practice.    Dysfunctional thinking is a pattern or lifestyle of finding solutions to problems that does not bring into play how that “solution” affects other people.

Appropriate ways of having needs met is taught.  Thinking out the full consequences of actions.

Please listen in to tonight’s rebroadcast at 9 for complete details.

Our second guest is Pam Wiese with the Nebraska Humane Society, she brings with her a sharpei shepherd mix, very sweet.  Leela is certainly seeking her new home, you can see her at the Nebraska Humane Society, her picture and profile is on their web page – the link is on this page.

Bathing your dog – if it’s an inside dog that will go out and roll in something stinky – you should basically wash the dog if he or she stinks or is muddy.  Outside dogs, it depends on their breed and if they’re hunting dogs.  Lots of hints are available on the NHS webpage.

With trick or treating going on this weekend, Pam suggests keeping your pets inside away from pranksters and unknown children that might startle your pet.  If your pet is high strung and gets upset over the door bell ringing, certainly put your pet in another room with a radio and a favorite toy.

September’s Note:

The reason the enemy tempts you is because he knows of the great thing God wants to do in your life, and he thinks you are dumb enough to give it all up for a few moments of pleasure.  He knows that not only do you stand to lose from it, but other people will be hurt by your sin as well.  When you see his trap, tell him you are not going to allow him to destroy your life or anyone else’s.

Today we visit, again through the wonder of recorded electronics, with Rhonda McCue and Mary Ann Gochenauer of the Museum of Religious Arts in Logan, Iowa.   They’re wrapping up a canned food drive this month, and then displays of Nativity sets are featured.  Nativity sets from all over the world, numbering well into the hundreds, are featured for the upcoming Christmas season.

Also, HOW the musuem came about and workshops, retreats that are held there, the perminant exhibits as well as visiting exhibits.

Brooke Winters provided a book review of Kirk Cameron’s book “Conquer your fears – share your faith”.

Rounding out the program today is Julie from Fontenelle Forrest, she brings with her a corn snake, pretty snake, THANKFULLY slow moving (producer Connie is a little leary of fast snakes), the snake is not native to Nebraska.  He is a teaching snake for the kids who visit Fontenelle.  He’s fascinated by the red lights on the control board.  He’s orange and tan.  September touched the snake as well. Soft and shiney.  Not at all slick and slimey.

The Dynoquest exhibit wraps up next week.

Saturday, November 7th is free admission day.  Fontenelle Forest is open year round.  Winter time is an excellent time to observe wildlife.  Lots of programs and presentations available, please check their website link on this page.

September’s Note:

Lord, I pray I will have no secret thoughts where I entertain ungodly desires to do or say something I shouldn’t.  I pray that I will have no secret life wher I do things I would be ashamed to have others see.

Getting back to normal after a round of flu through the studios.  Again, please cover your mouth and wash hands frequently if you’re feeling under the weather.  When you’re at work, keep in mind shared work stations, keyboards, mouse, etc. that should be wiped off with a germ killing cleaner.

First guest this morning is Amanda Yoke from HyVee, discussing the influx of sugar coming up this season, with Harvest parties, Thanksgiving, Christmas, on to Ressurection day – all celebrated with sugary candy.  Amanda suggests limiting the processed sugar and doing fruit and healthy snacks, non- food items as gifts work well too!

Over consumption of sugar stresses the pancreas, leads to tooth decay, diabetes, and other ailments.

Youth oriented groups (i.e. church youth groups, school groups) should also provide non-sugary treats for children who may have health issues.

HyVee is also sponsoring Whole Health at the Mid America Center November 8th noon to 6pm, please see HyVee’s link on this page.

Amanda brought some good recipes, check HyVee’s website for literally thousands of good recipes.  Popcorn balls using honey instead of sugar.  Lots more!

Heartland Men of Faith’s Wilson Metz is our second guest.  Men at the Cross event November 6th and 7th simulcast/webcast at Bethany Lutheran Church is planned for anyone who missed the event in Lincoln a few weeks ago.  Please see the website for more.

Barnabas training, discipling, lots more on this, just email wilson@heartlandmenoffaith.org

Monthly breakfast at Glad Tidings on 1st Tuesday of every month, unless there’s an official snow day.   Nov. 3rd, 6:15 -7:30 am  Steve Sheridan of Empty Tomb will be preaching.

www.heartlandmenoffaith.org for details on these events and more.

Wild at Heart Boot Camp in Colorado  really excited Wilson, who is hoping to gather enough men to put together a local Wild at Heart Boot Camp.  Again email Wilson if you’re interested.

Bridget Fitzgerald with the Omaha Police Department is our third guest, she’s discussing safe ways to have kid’s Harvest parties,  halloween safety tips.  Costume safety, check in times for kids being out, supervision are all important.

Reflectors, glow sticks, flashlights are important to help children be visible in the dark.

Also, restrain, remove pets from areas where visitors are likely to be.

Children should go only to houses where they’re familiar with the residents.

Drivers, please use some common sense and drive a little slower, be more alert for kids in the streets.

She says candles are used alot in cooler weather for decorating should be used with care.  Wet leaves are a slip hazard as well.

Please listen in to tonight’s rebroadcast at 9pm on 660 KCRO for full details.

September’s Note:

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.   Hebrews 12:1

Wow!  We hope this isn’t considered insider trading or anything like that…but take out stock in your favorite cold/flu medicine, cough drops, and boxed tissue!

Please keep our area in prayer for rapid healing for those affected by flu!  This strain is particularly potent.  If you’re feeling achy, coughing, sneezing, especially if you have a fever.  Stay home!  During this flu season, please wash your hands frequently and wash down surfaces with a germ killer.

Many of our staff and guests have been hit with this over the course of the week.

Today we have a “best of” program due to our planned guest feeling under the weather.  We’re revisiting a very worthwhile ministry, “Broken and Beautiful” and also discussing Israel and people wanting to visit there.

Something however, that far exceeds anything we’re discussing, bitter-sweet news.

Mary Anaya, co-founder of “Mission for All Nations” and one of our frequent guests on Embracing the Heartland, has passed on.  This is the bitter part for those of us who knew her and appreciated her.

The sweet part – she and her unborn baby are now being embraced by our Lord Jesus.  We suspect she is being greeted by the words “Well done  good and faithful servant!”

To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.  Our prayers are with her family remaining here, her husband Josue and their ten children.  Also for Mission for All Nations and all the precious souls this ministry helps.

Thank you to the Omaha World Herald for a nice front page article on Mary in Thursday’s paper.

A visitation time is planned for this evening 4 to 8pm at Braman Mortuary 1702 North 72nd.

A memorial service is slated for Saturday 9-11am at Glad Tidings, 7415 Hickory.

Medical bills are mounting for the family.  If the Lord leads you to help, please contact Wells Fargo Bank – Mary Anaya Medical Fund.

September and producer Connie, as well as the staff of Salem Radio Omaha encourage everyone to keep the family and ministry in prayer.   Thank you, Mary, for all you hard heartfelt and Spirit led work!

September’s Note:

Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trail which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.

1 Peter 4:12-13

Hi Everyone!  September is under the weather today.

So, we’re opening our treasure chest of already recorded programs and bringing out a gem by Femi Awodele on making your Marriage Recession Proof.

September’s Note:

Every time you rise above the pain in your life and find the goodness, clarity, peace, and light of the Lord there, your faith will increase.  God will meet you in the midst of your pain and not only perfect you, but increase your compassion for the sufferings of others.  As you continue to live in the presence of the Lord, His glory will be revealed in you.

Our guest today is Pastor Phil Waggoner, with his study on “Parenting from Proverbs”

September and Phil, both being parents – have discussed how to guide their kids to seek God’s counsel in making decisions.

Please listen in to tonight’s rebroadcast at 9 on 660 KCRO.  (We are carrying High School Football coverage of the Omaha Northwest vs Millard South game starting at 6:30…depending on the game, we could be joining the rebroadcast in progress)

Godly wisdom is not deceptive.  There is a craftiness and slyness that the world considers “wisdom” that decieves.  God’s wisdom is wholesome and good.  There is nothing twisted or crooked about it.  God’s words are plain and straight forward.

Proverbs 8 and Mark 5:21-23 are Pastor Phil’s foundation today.

September’s Note:

Sometimes difficult things happen to us so that the glory and power of God can be revealed in and through us.  we may not be able to understand why certain things are happening at the time, and we may never know why we have to go through them until we go to be with the Lord, but when we turn to God in the midst of difficult situations, God’s glory will be seen in them and on you.
